NIGERIAN OIL WORKERS GO ON STRIKE; REJECT UNBUNDLING OF NNPC

Nigerian oil workers today, Wednesday, 9th March embarked on a nationwide strike action and have vowed to continue indefinitely until they receive clarifications on Tuesday's unbundling of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Ibe Kachikwu, Minister of State for Petroleum had announced the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari for the restructuring of NNPC into seven independent operational divisions.

The new arrangement is such that the corporation has five business-focussed divisions namely, Upstream, Downstream, Gas & Power Marketing, Refineries and Ventures, together wwith two service oriented divisions, consisting Corporate Planning & Services and Finance and Accounts.

Each of the divisions is to be headed by a Chief Executive Officer who will report to the Group Managing Director.

The workers who have embarked on a strike accuse the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu of having a secret agenda as he unilaterally and arbitrarily took the decision without consulting all interested parties.

The  two workers unions, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG  have mobilised their workers to reject the new policy.

The strike recorded total shutdown on Wednesday in all NNPC offices accross the nation as the workers' union halted all operations.

The Acting General Secretary of PENGASSAN, Lumumba Okugbawa while speaking to PREMIUM TIMES said the protest will continue until the Minister invites the workers for a discussion on what the restructuring is all about.
