David Mark, the Senate President addressed the chamber after the closed door session and said the senators will always abide by the law of the land since the Supreme Court had asked the Federal Parliament to stay action on the document.
The Senators had earlier vowed to begin the process of overriding the President's veto by taking the first reading of the bill to adopt the gazette of the controversial amendment bill.
President Goodluck Jonathan had on April 13 addressed the Senate President, David Mark and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal through a letter informing them of his decision to reject the Constitution (Alteration) Bill 2015.
President Goodluck gave his reason for rejecting the amendment as perceived deliberate attempt by the Federal lawmakers to whittle down presidential powers and not adhering strictly to constitutional provisions on the amendments to Section 9 of the constitution by observing four-fifths majority support in each chamber before it could amend it. The Federal lawmakers only got two-thirds majority support against four-fifths stipulation in the constitution before amending the section.
Following the President's letter of refusal to authenticate the amendment, the National Assembly demanded a return of the bill.
Suspecting that the National Assembly might override the president's veto, the federal government took the National Assembly to the Supreme Court to stop them from carrying out any legislation on the amendment bill.
The Supreme Court ruled on May 7th asking the National Assembly to maintain the status quo ante on the amendment until final determination of the suit.
